Workaround for USB Power (Random Disconnecting) Problem

I'm a crazy USB user. In normal condition, my laptop powering a USB speaker, a mouse, a keyboard, and a cooler fan. That's a lot, and of course because of that my USB often disconnected randomly (due to not enough power). I'm always searching for a workaround in the internet and found nothing except uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" or buying a self-powered USB hub. Unchecking that option didn't work for me and I don't want to spend any money for this. Besides, IMO my USB usage is still manageable by the laptop.

So, I'm checking my device manager for any clue about this. Turns out, bluetooth module, SD card reader. and webcam (USB Composite Device) also eating up the USB power. You can see it in this screenshot: (go to My Computer, right click, properties, device manager, open up USB, and go to the properties of one of the generic USB Hub)

No wonder that I always getting a random USB disconnect. Things get worse if you follow the general troubleshoot and uncheck the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option, because by unchecking that option, the bluetooth module, webcam, and card reader are eating USB power THE WHOLE TIME! So the solution is to check the option back. If that isn't enough, disable this particular generic USB hub and enable it if you want to use one of those service only. My USB problem completely gone after doing this.

So, inspect your device manager carefully and disable any unnecessary device. This method is very easy and can save quite a few bucks (no need to buy self powered USB anymore!)

Hope it helps!
